Garden
The garden is set into the valley of the River Avon and has fine views over the valley and the Kennet and Avon Canal. The American Museum employed Lanning Roper to design a mixed border. There is a Colonial Herb Garden and a Mount Vernon Garden, which is a re-creation of George Washington's garden. The arboretum has a collection of American trees.

Famous quotes containing the word garden:
“A garden has this advantage, that it makes it indifferent where you live. A well-laid garden makes the face of the country of no account; let that be low or high, grand or mean, you have made a beautiful abode worthy of man.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The others acted a role; I was the role. She who was Mary Garden died that it might live. That was my genius ... and my sacrifice. It drained off so much of me that by comparison my private life was empty. I could not give myself completely twice.”
—Mary Garden (18741967)
“Lost at night in an immense forest, I only have a small light to guide me. A man appears who tells me: My friend, blow out your candle in order to find your way. This man is a theologian.
The sea, fluid garden filled with animals and plants.”
—Alfred Döblin (18781957)
