Famous quotes containing the words american, ballet, theatre, principal and/or dancers:
“Whatever else American thinkers do, they psychologize, often brilliantly. The trouble is that psychology only takes us so far. The new interest in families has its merits, but it will have done us all a disservice if it turns us away from public issues to private matters. A vision of things that has no room for the inner life is bankrupt, but a psychology without social analysis or politics is both powerless and very lonely.”
—Joseph Featherstone (20th century)
“Anyone who has a child today should train him to be either a physicist or a ballet dancer. Then hell escape.”
—W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
“The theatre is the involuntary reflex of the ideas of the crowd.”
—Sarah Bernhardt (18451923)
“The principal rule of art is to please and to move. All the other rules were created to achieve this first one.”
—Jean Racine (16391699)
“Proclaiming what choices there are
For the last dancers of their kind,
For ill women and for all slaves
Of death,”
—James Dickey (b. 1923)
