Ambohimanga - Compounds - Bevato

The compound called Bevato ("many stones") was the second most important and enclosed four houses for royal wives and their servants. This earliest of the royal compounds at Ambohimanga, inhabited by Andriantsimitoviaminandriana from 1710 to 1730, was originally called Fidasiana-Bevato. The two oldest houses in the compound were called Mahitsielafanjaka and Manatsarakely, and were the residences of Andriantsimitoviaminandriana and his 12 wives. These houses were renovated under Ranavalona I using wood from the region of Sihanaka to repanel the walls. Andrianampoinimerina constructed the second pair of houses in the compound. The house called Tsararay was reserved for his children, and another called Bevato was the residence of his wives when they would make the journey to Ambohimanga.
