Exhaust Gas Drive
Almost universally automotive alternators are powered by a pulley driven by a belt or chain from the crankshaft. This results in inevitable power loss. In automotive use driving the alternator results in approximately 10% fuel efficiency drop. Recently a company called ThinGap Automotive has produced an alternator powered by exhaust gases - not through a turbine.
