Alpine Skiing at The 1984 Winter Olympics

Alpine skiing at the 1984 Winter Olympics consisted of six events, held near Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia). The men's races were held at Bjelašnica, the women's at Jahorina from February 13-19, 1984.

This was the first Winter Olympics which did not serve as World Championships for alpine skiing.

Due to weather delays (a blizzard), the downhill races were postponed several days and run after the giant slalom races.

Famous quotes containing the words alpine and/or winter:

The shades of night were falling fast,
As through an Alpine village passed
A youth, who bore, ‘mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
    Excelsior!
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1809–1882)

The first general store opened on the ‘Cold Saturday’ of the winter of 1833 ... Mrs. Mary Miller, daughter of the store’s promoter, recorded in a letter: ‘Chickens and birds fell dead from their roosts, cows ran bellowing through the streets’; but she failed to state what effect the freeze had on the gala occasion of the store opening.
