Alpine Long-eared Bat

The Alpine Long-eared Bat (Plecotus macrobullaris) is a species of lump-nosed bat. It was originally described from Switzerland and Austria as a species intermediate between the Brown Long-eared Bat and the Grey Long-eared Bat in 1965. It was later described in 2001 and 2002, from France and Austria, respectively. Despite its name, this species is not restricted to the Alps, being found in Croatia and elsewhere. It differs from other European long-eared bats, such as the Brown Long-eared Bat, by its white underparts.

Famous quotes containing the words alpine, long-eared:

The shades of night were falling fast,
As through an Alpine village passed
A youth, who bore, ‘mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
    Excelsior!
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1809–1882)

Known commonly as the jackass, this long-eared little creature is respected throughout the southwest—roundly cursed yet respected—and here he is usually referred to by his Spanish name, burro. Because of his extraordinary bray, he is sometimes ironically called the “Arizona Nightingale.”
