Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation

Allotransplantation (allo- from the Greek meaning "other") is the transplantation of cells, tissues, or organs, to a recipient from a genetically non-identical donor of the same species. The transplant is called an allograft, allogeneic transplant, or homograft. Most human tissue and organ transplants are allografts.

An immune response against an allograft or xenograft is termed rejection. An allogenic bone marrow transplant can result in an immune attack termed Graft-versus-host disease.

Famous quotes containing the words stem and/or cell:

Apples? New Hampshire has them, but unsprayed,
With no suspicion in stem end or blossom end
Of vitriol or arsenate of lead,
And so not good for anything but cider.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

She that but little patience knew,
From childhood on, had now so much
A grey gull lost its fear and flew
Down to her cell and there alit,
And there endured her fingers’ touch
And from her fingers ate its bit.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
