Alice of Champagne - Family

Family

Alice was the second daughter of Henry II, Count of Champagne and Queen Isabella I of Jerusalem.

In 1197, her father died after falling from a window in Acre. The county of Champagne passed to his brother Theobald III. Following Henry's death, Isabella married her fourth husband, King Amalric II of Jerusalem. The marriage produced three half-siblings for Alice, Maria, Marie and Philippa: Sybilla, Melisende, and Amalric. In 1205, her mother, stepfather, and infant half-brother all died, leaving Alice an orphan at the age of nine. Her eldest half-sister, Maria of Montferrat succeeded as Queen of Jerusalem.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

... what a family is without a steward, a ship without a pilot, a flock without a shepherd, a body without a head, the same, I think, is a kingdom without the health and safety of a good monarch.
    Elizabeth I (1533–1603)

My ambition for station was always easily controlled. If the place came to me it was welcome. But it never seemed to me worth seeking at the cost of self-respect, or independence. My family were not historic; they were well-to-do, did not hold or seek office. It was easy for me to be contented in private life. An honor was no honor to me, if obtained by my own seeking.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

    The same dreadful set,
the same family of orange and pink faces
carved and dressed up like puppets
who wait for their jaws to open and shut.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
