His first marriage, in 1925, was to the well-travelled Maurine Samson, daughter of the late Amos Roland Samson and Liberty "Libby" Cole (Neal) of Champaign County, Illinois. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, she had lived in Boise, Seattle, San Francisco and Honolulu before their marriage. The Governor's official yacht, a Hong Kong health clinic and locomotive were named "Lady Maurine" after her. After she died in 1970, Grantham married Mrs M. E. Lumley in 1972. Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:
“In our personal ambitions we are individualists. But in our seeking for economic and political progress as a nation, we all go upor else all go downas one people.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“The general review of the past tends to satisfy me with my political life. No man, I suppose, ever came up to his ideal. The first half [of] my political life was first to resist the increase of slavery and secondly to destroy it.... The second half of my political life has been to rebuild, and to get rid of the despotic and corrupting tendencies and the animosities of the war, and other legacies of slavery.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
