International Career

McCarthy has trained with both the under-19s and the under-21s. In August 2010, he was a second half substitute for the England U-21s in the friendly win against Uzbekistan at Ashton Gate. He came on in place of Frank Fielding. On 15 March 2011, it was announced that McCarthy was named as part of a 31-man squad to face both Denmark in Viborg and Iceland at Deep Dale, Preston. If he had played he will faced then-current understudy Mikkel Andersen for Denmark and former teammate Gylfi Sigurðsson for Iceland. He started his first game for the under 21s against Denmark and kept a clean sheet in a 4–0 win.

McCarthy was named in the 80-man long list of potential players for the Team GB Men's Football team. On 12 June it was announced that he had made it down to the provisional 35 players for the tournament. Ultimately he did not make the final 18.

McCarthy was called up to the England Team on 16 May 2013 for the friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil, becoming the first Reading Academy graduate to gain an England call up.
