She lived in Peterlee from the age of 3 until 10, then in Billingham both Stockton Street and York Crescent, when her father worked for ICI. She attended St John the Evangelist Primary and a girls grammar school . She worked in the advertising sales department of the Northern Echo and the Evening Gazette.
