Albert Woolson

Albert Woolson

Albert Henry Woolson (February 11, 1848 – August 2, 1956) was the last surviving member of the Union Army who fought in the American Civil War. He was also the last surviving Civil War veteran on either side whose status is undisputed. At least three men who followed him in death claimed to be Confederate veterans, but their status as Civil War veterans has been debunked.

Famous quotes containing the word woolson:

    O, pluck was he to the backbone and clear grit through and through;
    Boasted and bragged like a trooper; but the big words wouldn’t do;
    The boy was dying, sir, dying, as plain as plain could be,
    Worn out by his ride with Morgan up from the Tennessee.
    —Constance Fenimore Woolson (1840–1894)
