Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Dismissal - Dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan

Dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan

On July 11, 2008, Palin's acting chief of staff Mike Nizich dismissed Monegan, offering him a position as executive director of the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which he turned down.

In a letter to DPS employees announcing his termination, Monegan wrote that he was an at-will employee and knew his dismissal was, "A possibility ever present," and that he had been advised that the governor wanted to take DPS in a "different direction." In an interview the next day Monegan said that the dismissal had come "out of the blue" and that "f the governor was upset with me for one thing or another, it had never been communicated to me."

Famous quotes containing the words public and/or safety:

A candidate once called his opponent “a willful, obstinate, unsavory, obnoxious, pusillanimous, pestilential, pernicious, and perversable liar” without pausing for breath, and even his enemies removed their hats.
—Federal Writers’ Project Of The Wor, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind.... Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn’t, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn’t have to; but if he didn’t want to he was sane and had to.
    Joseph Heller (b. 1923)
