Alaska Political Corruption Probe

Alaska political corruption probe refers to a widespread investigation from 2003 to the present by the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Internal Revenue Service into political corruption of seven Alaskan state lawmakers, as well as US Representative Republican Don Young and former US Senator Republican Ted Stevens. The investigation is sometimes referred to as 'The Corrupt Bastard's Club' and focused on the oil industry, fisheries, and private corrections industries.

As of November 2008 the investigation has resulted in indictments against five current and former Alaska state legislators on corruption charges, as well as the indictment and conviction of the late US Senator Ted Stevens on seven felony counts of failure to disclose gifts (later vacated). In addition, two executives of VECO Corporation have plead guilty to charges of bribery and conspiracy to impede the Internal Revenue Service. A number of Alaska businessmen, lobbyists and others have also been either indicted, convicted or otherwise implicated.

Famous quotes containing the words political, corruption and/or probe:

Both the Moral Majority, who are recycling medieval language to explain AIDS, and those ultra-leftists who attribute AIDS to some sort of conspiracy, have a clearly political analysis of the epidemic. But even if one attributes its cause to a microorganism rather than the wrath of God, or the workings of the CIA, it is clear that the way in which AIDS has been perceived, conceptualized, imagined, researched and financed makes this the most political of diseases.
    Dennis Altman (b. 1943)

All religions have based morality on obedience, that is to say, on voluntary slavery. That is why they have always been more pernicious than any political organisation. For the latter makes use of violence, the former—of the corruption of the will.
    Alexander Herzen (1812–1870)

Y’know scientists are funny. We probe and measure and dissect. Invent lights without heat, weigh a caterpillar’s eyebrow. But when it comes to really important things we’re as stupid as the caveman.... Like love. Makes the world go ‘round, but what do we know about it? Is it a fact? Is it chemistry? Electricity?
