Honours and Philanthropy
Sugar was knighted in 2000 for services to business. He holds two honorary Doctorates of Science, awarded in 1988 by City University and in 2005 by Brunel University. He is a philanthropist for charities such as Jewish Care and Great Ormond Street Hospital, and donated £200,000 to the British Labour Party in 2001. On 5 June 2009 it was reported that Sugar had been offered a peerage by Prime Minister Gordon Brown as part of a new enterprise role in his government, and he was subsequently created Baron Sugar, of Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney.
