Alan of Galloway - Marriages

Marriages

Alan was married three times and had numerous children from his first two marriages, although only daughters reached adulthood.

Alan's first wife was Ragnhild (Fona or Hilda), daughter of Ragnald, Lord of the Isles, whose daughter from this first marriage was Helen MacDonal of Galloway, married to Roger de Quincy (d. 1264).

Alan's second marriage in 1209, was to Margaret of Huntingdon (d. 1223), eldest daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon (d. 1219), by whom they had Christina (or Christiana) (d. 1246), who married William de Forz (d. 1260). They also had Dervorguilla (d. 1290), who married John de Balliol (d. 1314).

Alan's third marriage in 1228, was to Rose (d. after 1237), daughter of Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster (d. 1242), by whom they did not have child.

Alan also had a bastard son, Thomas, who survived into adulthood.

With Alan's death his holdings were divided between his three daughters and their husbands. A popular attempt was made within Galloway to establish his illegitimate son, Thomas, as ruler, but this failed, and Galloway's period as an independent political entity came to an end.

Famous quotes containing the word marriages:

The happiest two-job marriages I saw during my research were ones in which men and women shared the housework and parenting. What couples called good communication often meant that they were good at saying thanks to one another for small aspects of taking care of the family. Making it to the school play, helping a child read, cooking dinner in good spirit, remembering the grocery list,... these were silver and gold of the marital exchange.
    Arlie Hochschild (20th century)

Some marriages depend on domestic arguments the way the courts depend on litigation.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

Good marriages are made in heaven. Or some such place.
    Robert Bolt (1924–1995)
