Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 12.43%. Ahmadnagar has a sex ratio of 934 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 80.22%.

The majority of the population in Ahmednagar is Hindu. But there are small other religious groups such as Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians. According to Census, Hindus are 82%, Muslims 9%, Christians 5% and others are 4%. and Banjara 1%.
