Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park

Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park is a state park of California, USA, preserving a wilderness of freshwater springs and geologically recent lava flows. Unique in the California state park system, public access is by boat only. It is located in Shasta County, California. The state acquired the land from the Horr Ranch in 1975. There are 3 campgrounds — Horr Pond, Crystal Springs and Ja-She — each with three primitive campsites. Brilliant aqua bays and tree studded islets only a few yards long dot the shoreline. The size of the park is 4 miles (6.4 km) in length, 1 mile (1.6 km) or less wide and has over 13 miles (21 km) of shoreline. At the mouth of the springs, there are remains of Indian fish traps, low rock walls enclosing shallow water that were used to trap sucker and trout by the Ahjumawi. Of the park's 5,930 acres (2,400 ha), more than two-thirds of the area is covered by recent (two to five thousand years) lava flows including vast areas of jagged black basalt.

Famous quotes containing the words lava, springs, state and/or park:

We walk on molten lava on which the claw of a fly or the fall of a hair makes its impression, which being received, the mass hardens to flint and retains every impression forevermore.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

In short, as a snow-drift is formed where there is a lull in the wind, so, one would say, where there is a lull of truth, an institution springs up. But the truth blows right on over it, nevertheless, and at length blows it down.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain,
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain.
    I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and ev’ry highway,
And more, much more than this. I did it my way.
    Frank Sinatra (b. 1915)

    and the words never said,
And the ominous, ominous dancing ahead.
We sat in the car park till twenty to one
And now I’m engaged to Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.
    Sir John Betjeman (1906–1984)
