Africa Nazarene University - History

History

In 1985, Nazarene leaders began discussions with the Kenyan Commission for Higher Education. The commission, after hearing the church's proposals, recommended the Church start a liberal arts university. In 1987, Nazarene missionary Dr. Harmon Schmelzenbach coordinated the purchase of 70 acres (280,000 m2) of land in the Maasai Plains. In January 1990, at the recommendation of the Commission for Higher Education, Dr. Stephen W. Nease, the Africa Nazarene University Trust was organized with a board of trustees. On November 23, 1993, after three years of preparing a proposal for the University, the Commission for Higher Education granted a Letter of Interim Authority to operate a university. This meant that ANU was the first university to seek a charter under the Kenya 1985 Universities Act.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university is Professor Leah Marangu.
