- Greater London
As of 2001, about 70% of Afghans live in the capital, London, but this number has dropped recently due to migration to other cities. They settle mainly in particular areas. The west has definitely the highest Afghan population, with areas such as Southall and Greenford, and the northwest including Wembley, Kingsbury, Harrow, Hendon and Edgware. There are also some communities in the east in Stratford, and some minor communities are found in the southwest, north and northeast.
- West Midlands
In the West Midlands, there are Afghan communities in Birmingham (second highest in the country), Coventry and Wolverhampton. In Birmingham, most Afghans are in the south, in areas including Sparkbrook, Chad Valley and Bordesley. Some minor communities are also found in the city of Walsall.
- Greater Manchester
The southeast, including Rusholme, sees some Afghan communities in the city. There are also some in the northeast suburbs, including Oldham.
- Others
There are also Afghan communities in Northampton, Derby, Leicester, Bradford, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Slough, Peterborough and Blackburn.
According to the 2001 Census, the single largest Afghan community in the UK was West Southall, where 1,121 Afghan-born people and many more of Afghan descent live. The locations with the fewest Afghans are Northern Ireland and Wales, which as subdivisions are estimated to have no greater than 100 Afghan residents each.
