The SMU produced two papers: a report on the northern province of Badakhshan., and a review of the Strategic Framework for Afghanistan After the toppling of the Taliban government in late 2001, the SMU was renamed the Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU) and given a new mandate. Famous quotes containing the word history:

    Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)

For a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)
