Afghan New Beginnings Programme

The Afghan New Beginnings Programme aims to disarm, demobilise and reintegrate thousands of combatants from the Afghan Militia Forces and provide them opportunities to join the Afghan National Army, Afghan National Police or an alternative line of work.

It also aims to demobilise and reintegrate thousands of child combatants in Afghanistan. Many boys in Afghanistan were born into war. They have never known peace, but instead have encountered banditry and murder. The programme is funded by UNICEF.

Famous quotes containing the words beginnings and/or programme:

The beginnings of altruism can be seen in children as early as the age of two. How then can we be so concerned that they count by the age of three, read by four, and walk with their hands across the overhead parallel bars by five, and not be concerned that they act with kindness to others?
    Neil Kurshan (20th century)

In the case of all other sciences, arts, skills, and crafts, everyone is convinced that a complex and laborious programme of learning and practice is necessary for competence. Yet when it comes to philosophy, there seems to be a currently prevailing prejudice to the effect that, although not everyone who has eyes and fingers, and is given leather and last, is at once in a position to make shoes, everyone nevertheless immediately understands how to philosophize.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)
