Administrative Divisions of Cape Verde

Administrative Divisions Of Cape Verde

The territory of Cape Verde is divided into 22 concelhos (municipalities), and subdivided into 32 freguesias (equivalent to civil parish).

In Portuguese language usage, there are two words to distinguish the territory and the administrative organ. Administratively, right below the government, there are the municĂpios (municipalities), who administrate the concelhos, and below them, the juntas de freguesia who administrate the freguesias (civil parishes). Therefore, the concelhos are the first-level administrative subdivision in Cape Verde.

The islands are traditionally divided in two geographic regions (with no administrative meaning):

  • Barlavento Islands (windward), the six northern islands and
  • Sotavento Islands (leeward), the four southern ones.

Famous quotes containing the words divisions and/or cape:

I find myself ... hoping a total end of all the unhappy divisions of mankind by party-spirit, which at best is but the madness of many for the gain of a few.
    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)

The allurement that women hold out to men is precisely the allurement that Cape Hatteras holds out to sailors: they are enormously dangerous and hence enormously fascinating. To the average man, doomed to some banal drudgery all his life long, they offer the only grand hazard that he ever encounters. Take them away, and his existence would be as flat and secure as that of a moo-cow.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)
