The Administration for Western Armenia (Russian: Администрация Западной Армении) was a temporary Armenian provisional government between 1915 and 1918. It was initially set up around Lake Van after the Siege of Van, a key event of the Caucasus Campaign. Aram Manukian of Armenian Revolutionary Federation was the head. It was briefly referred to as Free Vaspurakan. After a setback beginning in August 1915, it was re-established in June 1916 as "Administration for Western Armenia" under the war zone. From December 1917, it was under Transcaucasian Commissariat, with Hakob Zavriev as the Commissar, and during the early stages of the establishment of Democratic Republic of Armenia, it was included with other Armenian National Councils in a briefly unified Armenia.
This provisional government relied on Armenian volunteer units, forming an administrative structure after the Siege of Van around April 1915. Dominant representation was from the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. Aram Manukian, or "Aram of Van," was the administration's most famous governor.

Famous quotes containing the word western:
“All right, so there he is, our representative to the world, Mr. Western Civilization, in codpiece and pantyhose up there on the boards, firing away at the rapt groundlings with his blank verses, not less of a word-slinger and spellbinder than the Bard himself and therefore not to be considered too curiously on such matters as relevance, coherence, consistency, propriety, sanity, common decency.”
—Marvin Mudrick (19211986)
