Historic Buildings

The administrative headquarters of the Botanic Gardens are located in the historic Goodman building, at the Hackney Road entrance on the eastern side of the Gardens. This was originally built in 1909 as the headquarters of the former Municipal Tramways Trust, and the adjacent Tram Barn A has been converted to hold the State Herbarium.

The Museum of Economic Botany, established by Schomburgk in 1879 and described as "the last purpose-built colonial museum in the world" is located within the Gardens a short distance to the west. Built in Greek revival style and opened in 1881, the building and its interior were extensively restored in 2008.

Famous quotes containing the words historic and/or buildings:

Never is a historic deed already completed when it is done but always only when it is handed down to posterity. What we call “history” by no means represents the sum total of all significant deeds.... World history ... only comprises that tiny lighted sector which chanced to be placed in the spotlight by poetic or scholarly depictions.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)

If the factory people outside the colleges live under the discipline of narrow means, the people inside live under almost every other kind of discipline except that of narrow means—from the fruity austerities of learning, through the iron rations of English gentlemanhood, down to the modest disadvantages of occupying cold stone buildings without central heating and having to cross two or three quadrangles to take a bath.
    Margaret Halsey (b. 1910)
