As of the 2012-13 NBL season, the Adelaide 36ers have had nine head coaches including "King" Ken Cole, who coached the team to two NBL Grand Finals in his two seasons with the club (1985 and 1986) including their 1st ever championship in 1986 (the first time the NBL GF was a best of 3 series instead of a single game), American Mike Dunlap who led the team to the 1994 NBL Grand Final series against the North Melbourne Giants and is the current coach of the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA becoming the first person to be a head coach in both leagues, and Australian basketball legend Phil Smyth who coached the team for 11 seasons from 1998 to 2007-08 and led them to the 1998, 1998–99 and 2001-02 NBL Championships.

As of 2012-13 the Adelaide 36ers are coached by former AIS coach Marty Clarke with Mark Radford as the assistant coach.
