Special Cases

  • A pre-abelian category is an additive category in which every morphism has a kernel and a cokernel.
  • An abelian category is a pre-abelian category such that every monomorphism and epimorphism is normal.

The additive categories most commonly studied are in fact abelian categories; for example, Ab is an abelian category.

Famous quotes containing the words special and/or cases:

There is special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, ‘tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be
now; if it be not now, yet it will come—the readiness is
    all.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

... in all cases of monstrosity at birth anaesthetics should be applied by doctors publicly appointed for that purpose... Every successive year would see fewer of the unfit born, and finally none. But, it may be urged, this is legalized infanticide. Assuredly it is; and it is urgently needed.
    Tennessee Claflin (1846–1923)
