Adams Claflin House

Adams Claflin House is a historic house at 156 Grant Avenue in the village of Newton Centre in Newton, Massachusetts. Built in 1890, it was named for Adams Davenport Claflin (1862–1933), son of Massachusetts Governor William Claflin. Claflin lived there with his wife, Agnes Walker Claflin, daughter of Congressman Joseph H. Walker. On September 4, 1986, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Famous quotes containing the words adams, claflin and/or house:

“If Washington were President now, he would have to learn our ways or lose his next election. Only fools and theorists imagine that our society can be handled with gloves or long poles. One must make one’s self a part of it. If virtue won’t answer our purpose, we must use vice, or our opponents will put us out of office, and this was as true in Washington’s day as it is now, and always will be.”
    —Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

No legislation can suppress nature; all life rushes to reproduction; our procreative faculties are matured early, while passion is strong, and judgment and self-restraint weak. We cannot alter this, but we can alter what is conventional. We can refuse to brand an act of nature as a crime, and to impute to vice what is due to ignorance.
    —Tennessee Claflin (1846–1923)

Beauty is all very well at first sight; but who ever looks at it when it has been in the house three days?
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
