Famous quotes containing the words adam smith, adam, smith and/or lecture:
“It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our necessities but of their advantages.”
—Adam Smith (17231790)
“Cannons and fire-arms are cruel and damnable machines; I believe them to have been the direct suggestion of the Devil. If Adam had seen in a vision the horrible instruments his children were to invent, he would have died of grief.”
—Martin Luther (14831546)
“Oh, dont tell me of factsI never believe facts: you know Canning said nothing was so fallacious as facts, except figures.”
—Sydney Smith (17711845)
“Some of the greatest and most lasting effects of genuine oratory have gone forth from secluded lecture desks into the hearts of quiet groups of students.”
—Woodrow Wilson (18561924)
