Academy For Performing Arts

The Union County Academy for Performing Arts is a full-time four-year public high school located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, on the Union County Vocational Technical Schools Campus. Its first year was the 2008-09 school year. It is currently a part of the info-sessions being held at the Union County Vocational Technical Schools Campus. Their newly built building was finished during the summer of 2010 and will begin enrolling more students.

The school is part of the Union County Vocational Technical Schools (UCVTS), which serves students in all of Union County. The students have a choice in majoring in theatre or dance with a comprehensive program designed to prepare the actors, dancers, stage managers, and technicians of tomorrow. Although the school logo features a music staff, notes, and film, APA does not offer a music or film track.

Students have the same academic curriculum as its sister schools, Union County Magnet High School, Union County Academy for Allied Health Sciences, Union County Vocational Technical Schools, and Academy for Information Technology. The teachers say only difference is on their focus, which is Performing arts, however many students have noticed that their curriculum is lacking in many areas. These students have also had a disproportionately large numbers of talks on respecting each other, to no avail. Recently the lack of respect for others culminated in a fistfight between two students that had to be broken up by a teacher. The students are on the Union County Vocational Technical Schools Campus for the first three years of high school, while their senior year will be spent at Kean University taking a full freshman course load which includes a concentration in their Performing Arts major.

As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 101 students and 9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.22:1.

Famous quotes containing the words performing arts, academy, performing and/or arts:

More than in any other performing arts the lack of respect for acting seems to spring from the fact that every layman considers himself a valid critic.
    Uta Hagen (b. 1919)

I realized early on that the academy and the literary world alike—and I don’t think there really is a distinction between the two—are always dominated by fools, knaves, charlatans and bureaucrats. And that being the case, any human being, male or female, of whatever status, who has a voice of her or his own, is not going to be liked.
    Harold Bloom (b. 1930)

And no one, it seemed, had had the presence of mind
To initiate proceedings or stop the wheel
From the number it was backing away from as it stopped:
It was performing prettily; the puncture stayed unseen....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

On every hand we observe a truly wise practice, in education, in morals, and in the arts of life, the embodied wisdom of many an ancient philosopher.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
