Abigail Adams Smith - Early Life

Early Life

Abigail "Nabby" Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, on July 14, 1765, and was, as her mother recorded, "the dear image of her still dearer Papa." Even as a child she was an important part of the domestic life of the Adams family, assisting her mother while her father was away in Philadelphia championing the Declaration of Independence. She continued this role throughout her youth, serving as a vital support for her mother while her father was serving as an American minister in Europe.

Famous quotes containing the words early life, early and/or life:

... goodness is of a modest nature, easily discouraged, and when much elbowed in early life by unabashed vices, is apt to retire into extreme privacy, so that it is more easily believed in by those who construct a selfish old gentleman theoretically, than by those who form the narrower judgments based on his personal acquaintance.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

What was any art but an effort to make a sheath, a mould in which to imprison for a moment the shining, elusive element which is life itself—life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose?
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)
