Abhaiwongse

Abhaiwongse (Thai: อภัยวงศ์) is a Thai noble surname.

The Abhaiwongse family governed Phra Tabong Province, Thailand (modern Battambang Province, Cambodia) for six generations between the late 18th century and 1907, when the territory was ceded to French Indochina. The title bestowed to the governor of Phra Tabong and used by each successive governor was Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejr (Thai: เจ้าพระยาอภัยภูเบศร์).

Members of the Abhaiwongse family include:

  • Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejr (Baen Abhaiwongse), first governor of Phra Tabong and originator of the family surname.
  • Princess Suvadhana, princess consort of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) of Siam. She was cousin with King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia.
  • Khuang Abhaiwongse, three-time prime minister of Thailand in the 1940s. Born in Phra Tabong, his father was the last of the Siamese governors of Phra Tabong.
