History

The company was formed by the division of the communications businesses of Australian Associated Press and began operating as the first significant competitor to Telstra in the long distance voice and data markets in 1991, receiving a carrier licence on 1 July 1997. In 2000 the company was acquired by Telecom New Zealand.

Acquisition of PowerTel - 2007 The acquisition of PowerTel by Telecom New Zealand provided AAPT with one of the most extensive networks in Australia.

Total focus on business and wholesale customers - 2010 The strategic sale of AAPT’s Consumer division to iiNet in September 2010 enabled AAPT to focus on two of its strongest markets, Business and Wholesale.

David Yuile appointed CEO - 2011 David’s considerable experience and knowledge of both the Australian telecommunications industry and the AAPT business enabled AAPT to adapt services and philosophies to deliver a premium level of service that provides the right fit for business.

Nextep acquisition –announced November 2012 AAPT announced it would purchase NEC Australia’s Nextep DSL business as part of a long-term strategic alliance between the two organisations. Nextep is a wholesale carriage service provider delivering broadband services to urban, metropolitan and regional areas.
