.243 Winchester

The .243 Winchester is a popular sporting rifle cartridge. Initially designed as a varmint round, it is now more frequently used on varmints such as coyote, medium to large game such as blacktail deer, whitetail deer, mule deer, pronghorn, and wild hogs. However, due to the smaller caliber bullet used, its suitability for large animals is dependent on skill level and the hunter's ability to make a clean and accurate shot. The .243 is based on a necked down .308 cartridge case and is known widely for its accuracy, flat trajectory, and relatively mild recoil.

Famous quotes containing the word winchester:

Up from the South at break of day,
    Bringing to Winchester fresh dismay,
The affrighted air with a shudder bore,
Like a herald in haste, to the chieftain’s door,
The terrible grumble, and rumble, and roar,
Telling the battle was on once more,
    And Sheridan twenty miles away.
    Thomas Buchanan Read (1822–1872)
