2009 A-League Grand Final - Controversy

Controversy

The red card to reds talisman Cristiano created a lot of controversy post match. The Brazilian starlet had been warned before that referee Matthew Breeze would send him off if he suspected anything untoward about his heading with flailing arms. He felt as though he was a marked man all season by referee Matthew Breeze " I couldn't sleep after the game."

Fox Sports analyst and Former Australia international Robbie Slater called for a top-notch overseas referee to control he A-League grand final after yet another controversial decision "ruined" the decider at Telstra Dome on Saturday night. Slater claimed that Breeze got it wrong when he sent Adelaide United striker Cristiano off after just 10 minutes in the championship decider against Melbourne Victory. There was no swinging elbow by Cristiano. They both used their arms for protection when they challenged for the ball. It was a complete accident. Our last three grand finals have all been marred by controversy. Last year we had Mark Shield missing a handball that deprived Central Coast of a penalty late in the decider against Newcastle. That led to the infamous Danny Vukovic incident when he slapped the ref's wrist and copped a lengthy ban. The year before, Shield sent off Adelaide captain Ross Aloisi after 30 minutes and that turned the grand final against Melbourne into a farce.

Famous quotes containing the word controversy:

And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
