2008 Champions Youth Cup

The 2008 Champions Youth Cup, second edition of the tournament, was canceled in June, two months before the start, because of a dispute between Football Association of Malaysia and the organizers (Gifted Group).

The tournament would have taken place in Malaysia from 5 August to 16 August 2008. China would have made their debut in the tournament this year, the other Asian sides this year would have been Qatar, India and hosts Malaysia. 16 teams were invited to the tournament: from Europe; from England, defending champions Manchester United and Chelsea, from Italy, AC Milan and Juventus (2007 CYC runners-up), Germany’s Bayern Munich and Spain’s Barcelona, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven from the Netherlands and Olympique Lyonnais from France and Portugal’s Porto. They were also invited two teams from South America, Flamengo from Brazil and River Plate from Argentina.

Famous quotes containing the words champions, youth and/or cup:

Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men’s reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of “the rat race” is not yet final.
    Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)

We too are ashes as we watch and hear
The psalm, the sorrow, and the simple praise
Of one whose promised thoughts of other days
Were such as ours, but now wholly destroyed,
The service record of his youth wiped out,
His dream dispersed by shot, must disappear.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)

I write mainly for the kindly race of women. I am their sister, and in no way exempt from their sorrowful lot. I have drank [sic] the cup of their limitations to the dregs, and if my experience can help any sad or doubtful woman to outleap her own shadow, and to stand bravely out in the sunshine to meet her destiny, whatever it may be, I shall have done well; I have not written this book in vain.
    Amelia E. Barr (1831–1919)
