  • Kenny Wallace, who was the driver of the #78 Furniture Row Chevrolet until after the Watkins Glen race, replaced the injured Kyle Petty in the #45 Petty Enterprises Dodge. Sterling Marlin piloted the #78 car, but did not make the starting lineup.
  • Aric Almirola made his NEXTEL Cup debut in the Dale Earnhardt, Inc. #01 Chevrolet sponsored by the U.S. Army.
  • Matt Kenseth clinched a spot in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup by taking the green flag.
  • The #31 Jeff Burton car owned by Richard Childress Racing raced without AT&T logos after NASCAR won an appeal filed in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, Georgia. That reversed an earlier decision that favored AT&T on behalf of its AT&T Mobility division. The original injunction was issued by the United States District Court in May. NASCAR has wanted to preserve brand exclusivity in the cellular telephone service category for the series' primary sponsor, Sprint Nextel.
