Georgia Tech coach Mac McWhorter was coaching on an interim basis (his only game as head coach) after coach George O'Leary left for the head coaching job at Notre Dame (which he was not able to keep due to a controversy). Coincidentally, Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham did become the next coach at Notre Dame, and thus this was his last game as head coach of Stanford.
