The following names were used for system that attained at least tropical storm intensity within the Atlantic basin in the year 2000. Although this was the same list used for the 1994 Atlantic hurricane season, storms were named Joyce, Leslie, Michael, and Nadine for the first time in 2000 due to inactivity in the former. Names that were not assigned are marked in gray. At their meeting in the spring of 2001, the World Meteorological Organization retired the name Keith from the list above due to its high impact and replaced it with Kirk for use in the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Famous quotes containing the words storm and/or names:

    I know my lazy, leaden twang
    Is like the reason in a storm;
    And yet it brings the storm to bear.
    I twang it out and leave it there.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

    Publicity in women is detestable. Anonymity runs in their blood. The desire to be veiled still possesses them. They are not even now as concerned about the health of their fame as men are, and, speaking generally, will pass a tombstone or a signpost without feeling an irresistible desire to cut their names on it.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
