1997 Rebellion in Albania - Opening of The Depots

The Opening of the depots (Albanian: Hapja e depove) was the opening of the weapon depots in the north, for the protecting against the violence of the south. The decision was taken by Sali Berisha.

When in southern Albania the army bases were looted, it was estimated that, on average, every male from the age of ten upwards possessed at least one firearm and ample ammunition. In order to protect the civilians in the north and central Albania, the government allowed the opening of the depots for the population of those areas too.

During the rebellion 656,000 weapons of various types, along with 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition, 3.5 million hand grenades, and 1 million land mines were looted from army depots.

Famous quotes containing the words opening of the, opening of and/or opening:

The Heavens. Once an object of superstition, awe and fear. Now a vast region for growing knowledge. The distance of Venus, the atmosphere of Mars, the size of Jupiter, and the speed of Mercury. All this and more we know. But their greatest mystery the heavens have kept a secret. What sort of life, if any, inhabits these other planets? Human life, like ours? Or life extremely lower in the scale. Or dangerously higher.
Richard Blake, and William Cameron Menzies. Narrator, Invaders from Mars, at the opening of the movie (1953)

    Haven’t you heard, though,
About the ships where war has found them out
At sea, about the towns where war has come
Through opening clouds at night with droning speed
Further o’erhead than all but stars and angels
And children in the ships and in the towns?
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
