1995 Ryder Cup

1995 Ryder Cup

The 31st Ryder Cup Matches were held at the Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York. The European team won the competition by a margin of 14½ to 13½ points to win back the Cup. At the time, this was only Europe's second victory on U.S. soil, the first of which was at the 1987 Ryder Cup. This was the third consecutive Ryder Cup where Bernard Gallacher captained the European side and the only one where his team was successful. Going into the Sunday singles matches Europe were trailing by 7 points to 9. They produced a spirited fightback on Sunday and for the first time overcame a deficit on the Sunday. The unheralded Irish rookie Philip Walton secured victory for Europe by defeating Jay Haas by 1 hole. The next Ryder Cup where Europe would win from behind was 2012, also held in the U.S.

Famous quotes containing the words ryder and/or cup:

The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
    Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
    Maryland!
    Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle-queen of yore,
    Maryland! my Maryland!
    —James Ryder Randall (1839–1908)

I write mainly for the kindly race of women. I am their sister, and in no way exempt from their sorrowful lot. I have drank [sic] the cup of their limitations to the dregs, and if my experience can help any sad or doubtful woman to outleap her own shadow, and to stand bravely out in the sunshine to meet her destiny, whatever it may be, I shall have done well; I have not written this book in vain.
    Amelia E. Barr (1831–1919)
