1993 Ryder Cup

The 30th Ryder Cup Matches were held at The Belfry in Wishaw, Warwickshire, England (near Sutton Coldfield). The United States team won the competition by a margin of 15 to 13 points. Europe took a slender 1 point lead into the Sunday singles matches in what was a close contest. Davis Love III secured victory for the United States by defeating Constantino Rocca by 1 hole. Through 2012, this is the last U.S. victory in Europe in the Ryder Cup and also the last time the U.S. retained the Cup.

Famous quotes containing the words ryder and/or cup:

The despot’s heel is on thy shore,
    Maryland!
His torch is at thy temple door,
    Maryland!
    Avenge the patriotic gore
That flecked the streets of Baltimore,
And be the battle-queen of yore,
    Maryland! my Maryland!
    —James Ryder Randall (1839–1908)

Sunday morning may be cheery enough, with its extra cup of coffee and litter of Sunday newspapers, but there is always hanging over it the ominous threat of 3 P.M., when the sun gets around to the back windows and life stops dead in its tracks.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
