“Why have such scores of lovely, gifted girls
Married impossible men?
Simple self-sacrifice may be ruled out,
And missionary endeavour, nine times out of ten.”
—Robert Graves (1895–1985)
“It is not he who gains the exact point in dispute who scores most in controversy—but he who has shown the better temper.”

“So, Willy, let you and me be wipers
Of scores out with all men—especially pipers;
And, whether they pipe us free, from rats or from mice,
If we’ve promised them aught, let us keep our promise.”
—Robert Browning (1812–1889)
