Season Review

After a resurgence in competitor numbers in 1990, 1991 was a low point in Australian Touring Car Championship history with entries down at almost every round and only eleven being received for Barbagallo Raceway. The season was dominated by the Fred Gibson run Nissan Motor Sport team. The team's two drivers won seven of the nine round between them, with six of those victories being part of 1-2 finishes. Mark Skaife scored more championship points than any other driver, but with only eight rounds counting towards each driver's nett total, Skaife lost ten points from the eighth round at Lakeside International Raceway, giving the title to his team mate and defending champion, Jim Richards. This continued the New Zealand domination of the Championship in the Group A era, with New Zealand drivers having won five of the seven Australian Touring Car Championships held under those regulations.

Third place was awarded to BMW driver Tony Longhurst who won two rounds, at Amaroo Park and Lakeside International Raceway. BMW's return with a top line team was underlined by team mate, ex-Formula 1 World Champion Alan Jones placing fourth in the points, after finishing the championship strongly with consecutive second placings in the final two rounds. After three years of competing with fast but fragile Ford Sierras, the consistency of the upgraded 2.5 litre evolution BMW M3s would have been a welcome change for Frank Gardner's team.
