1990 AFL Season - Notable Events

Notable Events

  • The Victorian Football League (VFL) was renamed and re-badged (with a new logo) the Australian Football League in 1990.
  • By the AFL rules at the time, the drawn qualifying final between Collingwood and West Coast was replayed on the following weekend. This meant that minor premier Essendon was given a second consecutive bye week, giving them three weeks between games. Essendon would ultimately reach the Grand Final through the Preliminary Final, but they were soundly beaten in the Second Semi-Final and Grand Final; Essendon lodged an official complaint with the AFL, claiming that the extended layoff was partly to blame for their poor finals performance. Agreeing with this assessment, the AFL would go on to introduce the provision to play extra time in tied finals matches (except the Grand Final) in future years.
  • The Port Adelaide Football Club from the South Australian National Football League made a bid to join the new AFL competition; the application was rejected, and a composite South Australian National Football League team, christened the "Adelaide Crows" was admitted to the AFL competition in the 1991 season.
  • The Brisbane-Melbourne game in Round 5 was the 10,000th VFL/AFL match.

Famous quotes containing the words notable and/or events:

In one notable instance, where the United States Army and a hundred years of persuasion failed, a highway has succeeded. The Seminole Indians surrendered to the Tamiami Trail. From the Everglades the remnants of this race emerged, soon after the trail was built, to set up their palm-thatched villages along the road and to hoist tribal flags as a lure to passing motorists.
—For the State of Florida, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Genius is present in every age, but the men carrying it within them remain benumbed unless extraordinary events occur to heat up and melt the mass so that it flows forth.
    Denis Diderot (1713–1784)
