1979 Governor General's Awards

Each winner of the 1979 Governor General's Awards for Literary Merit was selected by a panel of judges administered by the Canada Council for the Arts. The 1979 awards were the first in which a list of finalists was released a month before the presentation of the awards. This was done to attract more publicity.

Famous quotes containing the words governor and/or general:

There are times when even the most potent governor must wink at transgression, in order to preserve the laws inviolate for the future.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

The general public is easy. You don’t have to answer to anyone; and as long as you follow the rules of your profession, you needn’t worry about the consequences. But the problem with the powerful and rich is that when they are sick, they really want their doctors to cure them.
    Molière [Jean Baptiste Poquelin] (1622–1673)
