It was the 78th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1974 VFL season. The match, attended 113,839 spectators, was won by Richmond by a margin of 41 points, marking that club's ninth premiership victory. The game itself is also notable for being the first grand final broadcast in colour.
