1924 Rose Bowl - Pre-game Buildup

Pre-game Buildup

The 1924 Rose Bowl was the first meeting between Navy and Washington, and was the first bowl game that either team participated in. The competitors for the contest were announced on November 30, 1923, and the teams arrived for the bowl in mid-December, holding practices up until the evening before the bowl. It rained heavily the night before the game. Washington coach Enoch Bagshaw was quoted as stating "Wet weather will not bother us", and Navy coach Bob Folwell stated that "My men will know what to do in the mud and will be there doing it". Because of the wet conditions, several football critics predicted that Washington would have a slight advantage in the game. It was estimated that approximately 52,000 people would attend the game. For the first time, the job of ticket sales had been given to the participating teams, and as a result only 40,000 people actually attended. However, a large number of tickets were sold to a navy fleet which was called to service on December 31, the day before the game. The competition was the first Rose Bowl to be broadcast over radio, being announced by a local Pasadena station.

Famous quotes containing the word buildup:

I think those Southern writers [William Faulkner, Carson McCullers] have analyzed very carefully the buildup in the South of a special consciousness brought about by the self- condemnation resulting from slavery, the humiliation following the War Between the States and the hope, sometimes expressed timidly, for redemption.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
