1907 Punjab Unrest - Colonisation Bill

Colonisation Bill

The colonisation bill was passed in the year 1906. This bill was passed after the passing of the Punjab Land Alienation act which had already caused a feeling of discontent among the Elite urban class. The colonisation bill provided for transfer of property of a person after his death to the government if he didn't have any heirs of his own and the Government could sell the property to any public or private developer. This was completely against the social conditions prevailing in the region and hence it was rejected by all the sides.

Famous quotes containing the word bill:

Meantime the education of the general mind never stops. The reveries of the true and simple are prophetic. What the tender poetic youth dreams, and prays, and paints today, but shuns the ridicule of saying aloud, shall presently be the resolutions of public bodies, then shall be carried as grievance and bill of rights through conflict and war, and then shall be triumphant law and establishment for a hundred years, until it gives place, in turn, to new prayers and pictures.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
