In August Bishop Harper resigns as Bishop of Dunedin, and therefore Primate of New Zealand, his resignation to take effect from March the following year. Bishop Hadfield is chosen as the next Primate of New Zealand, the validity of a decision to make such a choice before Bishop Harper's resignation would take effect being questioned by Bishop Suter.
